Four steps from quote to driveway
Most people have never shipped a car before. Here is exactly what happens, in order, so nothing catches you off guard.
We assign a carrier
We post your route and match it to a vetted hauler. We check their authority and cargo insurance against FMCSA records before anyone touches your vehicle. Only then does payment come up.

Pickup and inspection
The driver calls ahead, walks the vehicle with you, and records its condition on the bill of lading. You both sign. That document is what protects you if anything is disputed later.

Delivery and sign-off
The driver calls when they're close. You inspect against the pickup report, sign, and pay the carrier the balance — cash, certified funds, or whatever you agreed at booking. If something looks wrong, do not sign a clean bill of lading; note it, photograph it, and call us before the truck leaves.

Per-mile rates drop sharply as distance rises — a 300-mile move costs far more per mile than a coast-to-coast run. These are running sedan rates on open carriers, generated by the same engine as the quote tool above.

Pick the service that fits the car
Door-to-door
The truck comes to your address, not a terminal. If the street can't take a 75-foot rig, the driver meets you at a nearby lot — a grocery store or shopping centre a few minutes away.
Open carrier
The standard eight to ten car hauler you see on the interstate. It is how dealerships move new inventory, and it is what roughly nine in ten of our customers choose.
Enclosed carrier
A sealed trailer, usually two to seven cars, often with a hydraulic lift gate for low clearance. Worth the premium for anything collectible, freshly restored, or six figures.
Expedited
A guaranteed pickup date instead of a window. We pay above market to pull a driver onto your lane, so it costs more — but the date holds.
Cross-country
Coast to coast on the major freight corridors. Long lanes have the best per-mile economics, so a 2,800-mile move often costs less than twice a 900-mile one.

Getting your car ready
Fifteen minutes of prep prevents most delivery disputes. The bill of lading is only as good as the condition of the car when it's written.

Answers before you commit
How much does it cost to ship a car?
Distance, vehicle size, whether it runs, and open versus enclosed. Per-mile rates fall as distance rises — roughly $1.45 a mile under 300 miles, about $1.00 at 600 miles, and near $0.57 coast to coast. A running sedan on an open carrier from Chicago to Miami lands around $950 to $1,100. Price your specific route for a real range.
When do I pay, and how?
Nothing is charged until a carrier is assigned and pickup is scheduled. At that point you pay the broker fee, and the balance goes to the driver at delivery — cash, certified funds, or whatever you agreed at booking. If we never dispatch a carrier, you never pay.
How long will it take?
Pickup is typically 1 to 5 days after dispatch depending on the lane. Transit is roughly 1 to 3 days under 500 miles, 2 to 5 days for 500 to 1,500 miles, and 5 to 10 days coast to coast. Weather, road closures, and DOT hours-of-service rules can move these. You get an estimated window before you book, not after.
Is my vehicle insured during transport?
Yes. Every carrier we dispatch carries active cargo insurance, and we verify it against FMCSA records before assigning your vehicle. Your own policy generally still applies as well. Personal belongings left in the car are not covered by cargo insurance.
Can I leave items in the car?
Up to about 100 pounds in the trunk, below the window line. It is not covered by cargo insurance, it adds weight the carrier is liable for at weigh stations, and some carriers refuse it outright. Keep it light and keep anything valuable with you.
What does the price guarantee actually cover?
Your booked rate is locked for 30 days from booking. If carrier rates on your lane rise in that window, we absorb the difference rather than passing it to you. It does not cover changes you make — a new pickup address, a switch from open to enclosed, or a vehicle that turns out not to run will be re-quoted.
Can you ship a car that doesn't run?
Yes, but it needs a carrier with a winch, and it must roll, brake, and steer. Expect roughly $150 to $200 above the running rate. Tell us at quote time — discovering it at pickup means the driver leaves without the car and you go back on the board.
Do you pick up from auctions?
Regularly — Manheim, ADESA, Copart, and IAAI nationwide. Send the lot number, buyer ID, and gate pass details when you book. Worth noting that auction storage fees start accruing fast, so book the transport the same day you win the lot.
What if my car is damaged in transit?
Note it on the bill of lading before the driver leaves, photograph it, and call us the same day. That signed condition report from pickup is what makes a claim work. Sign a clean delivery receipt and the claim becomes very hard to win — so inspect properly, even in the dark, even in the rain.
Can I track my vehicle?
Once dispatched, you get the carrier's direct contact and we check in on the load. Most owner-operators do not run consumer-facing GPS, so tracking is a phone call rather than a map pin. Anyone promising live GPS on every load is overselling how this industry works.
